A MESSAGE FROM THE SENIOR CLASS ADVISOR

• •*•••*••••*••#***■
When I took the role of your advisor, I did not know what
to expect. I knew that I would get to know many of you
outside the classroom and that we would be planning many
fundraisers and events in the next years, but I did not
anticipate to work with such a wonderful class. I have had
many of you as students and know others from the hallways
and our class events. We have all had our triumphs and
trials, but it is through these that we find who we really are.
You have grown from small, timid freshmen into
knowledgeable and gifted young men and women. Take
your experiences, whether good or bad, and learn from
them. Apply these lessons to your life and to others' lives,
and leave the world a better place. You have left a legacy to
this school community, now go and impact the world that
awaits. Do not conform to others' beliefs. Make your own
and stick by them. Learn to forgive and learn how to love,
and remember who you are even through life's twisted and
bumpy trials. May your experiences and travels provide a
solid foundation for your dreams of tomorrow. I will leave
you with one final thought from Dr. Seuss: "You're off to
Great Places! Today is your day! Your mountain is waiting.
So . . . get on you way!
Thanks for all the wonderful memories!
1 wish you the very best!

Paul C. Gagliarducci, Ed.D.

Superintendent of Schools

Message from The Superintendent

W ouldn't it be nice if we could freeze time and stay
where we are? Sometimes, even at my age, I wish I could
turn back the clock to my high school years. But we all
know that we can't and we also know that with every
day there will come changes. To me, your yearbook
theme, "Stay What You Are" doesn't really suggest that
time stops but rather that each of you stay who you are.
What an important concept to hold on to as you leave
Minnechaug. Staying what you are can mean different
things. To me it means that you should keep the fine
qualities that helped to get you to this point in your life: a
willingness to learn, a desire to accomplish, and most
importantly, an ability to adapt, change, and persevere.
If you hold on to these qualities, then you will continue
to be successful in whatever you choose to do. You will
soon confront both challenges and opportunities in the
years ahead. The decisions that you make when these
times occur will not only affect you but many others. This
is the fact that sets the "tomorrows" apart from the
"todays". I have learned that Minnechaug graduates find
ways to make good decisions, which in turn help to make
a difference for themselves and others. They do so
because they "stay what they are". It is a tradition that
sets Minnechaug graduates apart.

Best Wishes in the Years Ahead.

Mr. John Logan

Principal of Minnechaug R.H.S.

A Message from the Principal

Your yearbook theme, "Stay What You Are" can
mean many things to many people. To me it means
not forgetting where you came from and the
individuals that supported you along the way - of
appreciating the contributions and sacrifices of
those who nutured and directed you during your
formative years - of the community and the school
that was so much a part of your growth into
adulthood. In addition, Minnechaug's mission
statement conveys that our school community "...
strives to prepare students to be responsible,
creative, and productive world citizens who can
live and work in a global society." "Stay what you
are" could mean striving to incorporate
Minnechaug's mission into your own personal
future goals and endeavors. As you build upon
"what you are" and by design or otherwise begin to
develop a purpose for your life, consider the words
of Leo Rosten who said, "The purpose of life is to
matter, to be productive, to have it make a
difference that you lived at all."

(Editors Note: The FALCON thanks Mr. Logan, who retires

at the end of this year, for years of support of the
FALCON Yearbook and "All Things Minnechaug"!)

.innechaug Football in 2004 was a story of
great effort, very few lucky breaks, and thrilling
moments! Led by Head Coach Dan Donvan, the
Falcons were a constant threat to all opponents.
Let down your guard for even one moment with
these Falcons and you risked any lead you might
have had. Varsity Co-Captains Matt Burzdak,
Dan Cohen, Andrew Fiola, Josh Hulseberg, and
Joe Jolicoeur drove their team to solid 6-5 season
record, 5-4 in AA play. Senior Quarterback Dan
Cohen threw with authority and connected time
after time with able receivers Jolicoeur and
Hulseberg, Jack Cutter, and Jovaney Toledo.
Coaches Fenalson and Griffen brought the Junior
Varsity through some tough times to a 3-6
season, while Coaches Orzech and Person led the
Freshman team to a 5-3-1 final record. Keep
watching Freshman Mike Lavoie!

he Minnechaug Varsity and Junior Varsity
cheerleaders more than ever, had the fans pumped-
up and roaring with their uplifting spirits and
outstanding talent. Senior Captains, Krysten
Farrell and Karissa Nickerson along with Junior,
Jess Brehaut, led the Varsity squad. Seniors
Chelsea Choi, Lauren Cusson, Lauren Pandolfi,
Kate Quigley, Heather Grimaldi and Ann Hyszak
also helped the team with their enthusiasm and
experience. Captains Kaleigh Toole, Jen Farrell
and Heather McCarthy led the JV squad. The girls
cheer for football games in the fall and basketball
games in the winter with much training and
guidance from Varsity Coach Kristina Wood and
JV coach Kelley Tranter. It is said that
Minnechaug fans are still waiting for 45 additional
push-ups from the Chaug vs. Westfield game.
Many of us forget that cheerleading is the one "all-
season" sport at Minnechaug and after football and
basketball, the girls say they are, "Excited and
waiting, but mostly preparing for our competition
season". Let's hear it for the FALCONS.

he Boys' Varsity Soccer finished with yet another
Smith Division Title. It was the Falcons' sixth
straight league title. Senior Captains Kyle Schmutte,
Paul Murphy, Bryan Markham, and Chris Keinath
led the way for the Falcons with strong physical play.
Also stepping up big for the Falcons were Juniors
Joe Calabrese, Mario Valentini, Blake Willingham,
and Sophomore Colin O'Donnell. Despite a slow
start, the Falcons finished with an outstanding
record of 12-3-5. The Falcons will be saying
goodbye to 12 Seniors. The Junior Varsity led by
Coach Rich Burgess and Captains Josh St. Laurent,
Tim Rogers, and Nick Sibilia finished with a regular
season record of 9-3-4. The Freshman team led by
Coach John Farrero finished the season with a
record of 6-5-2. The Falcon soccer program looks to
be heading in the right direction. Expect good things
from the Falcons in the future.

.11 three FALCON Girl's Soccer teams did a
tremendous job this time around. Coach Nundi
Goncalves was proud of the Varsity team coming in
1 st place in the Kurty Division Championship with
a record of 13-1-2. Varsity Captains Melissa
McCarthy and Sara Wilson led the way to this great
record. JV Coach Mary Miller led her team to a
final record of 12-1-3. JV Captains Aurelie
Marcotte and Alexandria Baird set a terrific pace
for all to follow. Freshman Coach Brian Machia
and his team finished up the season with a record of
14-0-2. Freshman Captains Rima Bonemery, Kelly
Ethier, Erin Simons and Rachel Wyszynski were no
exception and show lots of promise. As usual our
division was filled with competitive teams and
Minnechaug gave a season to remember!

.nxiety is hanging in the air. As the gun fires, they're
off! Stay on the line. Round the corner, now, pace
yourself, then, past other teams competing. Dozens of
runners pushing and shoving to take the lead on the
narrow course. Stay on the line! In the woods. Stay on the
path. Watch for mud! Watch for the occasional wooden
critter! Don't get lost. Pour it on now. The finish line is
coming into sight. The crowd is cheering you on. Yes. . .
many records were tied, and some were broken. After
weeks of running day and night Coach Hill and Girls' Co-

Captains Ashley Hamill, Meredith Malysz, and Danielle
Petersen drove their team to an outstanding 7-2 overall
record. Caroline Callaghan, Allison Fiminari, and Victoria
Szydlowski all qualified for All-League, and Callaghan and
Szydlowski went on the qualify for States. Boys Coach
Osgood, along with Co-Captain Mike Baker, Brian Muse,
and Matt Remillard, saw us through a bruising season to a
final record of 3-6. This belied the numerous strong
showings that kept Minnechaugs' reputation of hard
working, hard running, competition intact.

his was anything but an easy season for the Girls'
Volleyball team, but they remained strong
throughout the entire season. Their season ending
with a record of 9-1 1 , one game off from making the
Western Mass Semi-finals. JV finished their season
with an outstanding 1 5-5 record. They were led by
Co-Captains Heidi Brown and Katie Gagnon. The
girls got off to a strong start, but as the season went
on and the rotation was altered the team had a
rough time adjusting to the change, but always gave
it their best. They showed ambition and a love for
the game by coming out and finishing the season
with only loosing each match by two points. Co-
Captains Stephanie Dancy, Jessica Rossi, and
Nicole Croteau led this team through the season.
The girls had high expectation from their fans with
defending a four year Western Mass. title. JV
players Katie Gagnon, Shaylyn Hewitt, and Jessica
Sawyer were brought up halfway through the season
to contribute their skills to the Varsity team. The
key players to look for next year are Rebecca
DeSanti and her outstanding offense, Rachel Smith
and her incredible defense, and Christina Figueredo
with her accurate setting. This team represented
Chaug's true spirit because they never quit and they
fought to the end.

ended the year with a strong record of 1 1-5. The
team was led by the strong, skilled example of
the three team Captains, Nate Lopata, Steve
Campfield, and Jared Pabis. Also Seniors Ryan
Greener, Nick Marchetti, and Mike Ford had
great years. Consistent strong showings could be
counted on from Junior Dan Crowley. Lopata,
Campfield, and Pabis led the team in scoring for
the year. Steve Campfield shot a 77 and Nick
Marchetti shot a 80 in the Western Mass

his was a great year for Minnechaug Gymnastics.
With the guidance of our Captains, Susan McDiarmid
and Karis Gale, the team carried themselves to the top,
with a record of 8 and 6. With a team of only 13 girls
they have held their ground and stood right up there at
the top with the best of the best. It just goes to show you
that you don't necessarily need a lot of members on a
team to be the best. The biggest influence to the team
itself would have to be the two wonderful coaches. Their
names are Bree O'Neil and Cheryl Palm. One of the
biggest accomplishments of the Minnechaug Falcon
Gymnastics would have to be their win over Agawam.
Another memorable moment would have to be when
Karis Gale, Stephanie Carlyle, and Lindsey Savola were
honored with the Gymnastic Senior award. They have
done a great job this year. If this is any prediction of
how good we are now imagine how good we will be next
year and then the year after that. Keep up the good work.

he Varsity Field Hockey team closed their

Western Mass Finalists, something that the field
hockey teams at Minnechaug had never
accomplished. Captains Jessica Ginsberg, Hailey
Sarage, and Phuong Pham along with former JV
Coach, Sherri Dungan helped the team with their
achievements. The Falcon's offense was strong
and there were many goals scored off of assists,
but, it was the girls' defense that enabled them to
succeed and win against the stronger teams in the
league. They came out with a strong win against
Northhampton in the quarter finals, and then
again against Southwick in the semis. The JV
team finished with a 3-3-1 1 record, led by Coach

The Falcon Wrestling team posted an
outstanding season record of 16-4 while under
the wings of Coaches Steve Marino and Tom
Davis. Long-time rivals Agawam and
Longmeadow both fell to the Falcons while
competing during the regular season. The team
was led by Senior Captains Andrew Mackin.
Matt Burzdack. and Matt Fall as well as a strong
Senior core. Many underclassmen were also very
important contributors to the success of the
season. The Falcons made a strong show at the
Western Mass. Tournament. Eleven out of
fourteen varsity members moved on to the State
Tournament while two Senior Captains (Matt
Burzdak and Matt Fall) left Western Mass. with
first place finishes. Senior Captain Andrew
Mackin also finished strong as a Western Mass
Finalist. The many victories led to a winning
season unprecedented in Falcon wrestling
history.

For the first time in many. many, years the
Minnechaug Boys' Basketball team has a League
Championship! Led by Varsity Co-Captains Chris
DeYine and Matt Smith we played hard and smart
and beat rival West Springfield 65-41 to bring home
the Suburban League Championship! We did tie for
the title in 96-97. but we haven't taken the title
home by ourselves in more than 2 decades. This
time around we played better, practiced more
effectively, and just plain did things right! All that
and we scored a lot of points. Brendan Murph\ ^as
the league-leading scorer. Coaches Frazier. Orzech.
and Andrews have a lot to be proud of this j e
The Freshmen struggled through to an incredibly
hard-fought 4- It? record, but the Junior Van
reversed it and turned in a final 16-4. We stuck with
our hard hitting man-to-man defense and pressed a
very physical game on every opponent. And it
worked!

It was another great year for the Minnechaug Boys' and Girls' Ski Teams ! Coaches
worked us hard and trained us well. Girls Co Captains Natalie Kinder and Kaeley Shepard, i
with Boys Co-Captains Dave Cienciwa, Jared Pabis, and Tim Rogers set and incredible pace and we
followed. The long rides to Berkshire East seem to focus us this year. This was a great group to be
with each and every time we hit the slopes, and when we came down away from the hills too. But it
wasn't just fun and games and we've got the record to prove it. Tim Rogers and Jared Pabis placed in
States. Tim Rogers finished 25th in the slalom and 27th in the giant slalom in the Mass. Alpine
Skiing Championships. Natalie, Kaeley, and Lauren Ross all qualified for States. A great season, and
a great bunch of people to be with.

Mass. The medle\ relax with Andy, Mike
Berthaume. Ray Chaisson. and Brett Lajzer broke
that record and also took Western Mass. The
Boys' team capped off the season with an
incredible third place overall finish at the State
Championships. Coaches Erik Mandel and
Bridget Gullberg deserve alot of the credit tor
driving tis to these heights. We mention these
names, but the list could go on and on of the
contributors to these awesome successes. Many
swimmers and divers came through in clutch
moments to pull us over the top time after time
when we needed them most. Hats off to a great
group in and out of the pool. It was a great year!

An unbelievable year. An unbelievable Varsity. \
terrific Junior Varsity. Varsity Coaches Derosia.
Moriarty. and Palm made us work like never before.
All those long hours on the ice really are paying off!
We ended the regular season with a blood-rushing
1 2-6-2 record and Tournament action! This was our
first time back in the play-offs in five years. Beating
arch-rival Westfield 6 to 2 in one of the hardest-
hitting games in the regular season was one of those
big moments we will all remember forever. And this
was a season with a lot of those moments we won't
forget. Varsity Co-Captains Todd DeAngelo. Peter
Fatse. Tim Gianfelice. Brandon Melikian. and Paul
Murphy fought hard and often for the "Green and
White" and brought us the victories we needed. (Jim
could always be counted on for a bone-crunching bit
when we needed it most!) The JV did us proud with
a final 9-3-1 record. We see a areat future.

Once Again . . .

The FALCON Yearbook Staff and Advisors have

tried to catch the special moments, some serious,

some silly. We do try to show everyone at their

best. But, we also try not to take ourselves to

seriously! We do take a few "liberties",

(particularly on this spread), but we really do

not intend to offend. If we have upset anyone,

we are sorry. We hope you enjoyed seeing these

pages as much as we did putting them together.

T

he Elements of Publishing Class,
Afterschool Yearbook, Contributors, and
many, many, students, staff, parents and
community members assisted in putting
together this FALCON. We always accept
photos for consideration for publishing and
this year we were deluged with a flood of
great photos. We tried to include as many
as possible. Special thanks this year for
some terrific photos from all the
photographers at Photography by Duvals
and our good friend, David Miles , of The
Wilbraham-Hampden Times .

Hopefully, we will make this a complete

YEARbook when we publish the

supplement in the fall to include

Graduation, The Prom, Spring

Sports Team photos, etc.
